Lifelong learning? Yes, please!

There is saying ‘you are never too old to learn”. And I fully agree with this saying!

I’m still learning every single day! At work. At home. From colleagues. From my daughters. About technology. Or psychology. Or ...

And the day I stop learning, is the day I’ll get bored and … well, I’ll keep searching for something to learn! Really, for me it feels like there is no other option to go through life.

So what kinda learning? And how to learn? Anything really. In different ways

  1. such as reading non-fiction books : on innovation, psychology, strategy, coaching, customer experiences

  2. or listening or watching inspirational key notes : on professional events, online events or recorded events, webinars, ... .

  3. or by following some online courses such as the basics of Python, design thinking

  4. languages then again can be improved via useful apps (eg. Duolino) or on Spotify

  5. by trying out new and handy tools, just by getting started and exploring : Miro, Powtoon, Prezi , …

  6. and not to forget, from people around me, people who intrigue & inspire me : who do things differently, who have different skills, who create progress in their unique way

I very much also like to learn from people a lot younger than me; amongst others surely my 2 daughters. It is fascinating how they look at life in general (YOLO… you only live once, right?!).

Still, I’d like to make a call to the youngster out there : take also the time to learn from ‘the oldies’.

I’ve seen many young graduates, starting in a new role. Eager. Ambitious. Energetic. Ready to make an impact in the organisation. On the world.

And I just love witnessing this! Their enthusiasm is so visible, and is só energising and contagious!

Yet, there is one pitfall : the pitfall of wanting to start from scratch, and not tap in from available expertise; of wanting to do things on their own way, with the risk of re-inventing the wheel.

And that's a pity because precious time can get lost. Because if that youthful energy, those fresh insights, that eagerness to succeed, is combined with learning from the past,… well, the picture is obvious, no?! That's where success lays. That's where you see the most awesome & fastest progress. For everyone. And on all levels.

So I’d like to launch a new saying into the world :

'Let young and old learn as one, and progress has begun!

'

I mostly remember.

on learning there is no age! Fortunately not!

More tips to keep learning :

  • you can find online courses or training program a.o. with Coursera, Skillshare, Udacity, ...

  • I find Ted talk a very valuable source of inspiration. Maybe not so much traditional 'learning', but more inspiration for a lot of reflection!
